What is Dysport

Dysport is a wrinkle relaxer comprised of botulinum toxin type A. It is frequently used for cosmetic purposes to provide a more youthful and rested appearance. Dysport is made from AbobotulinumtoxinA, while Botox is made from OnabotulinumtoxinA. Both use the botulinum toxin molecule to block the release of acetylcholine from nerve cells. Acetylcholine triggers muscle contractions, which, over time, leads to wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. The skin thins and weakens with age and can no longer be taught during muscle contractions. The result is wrinkles and fine lines.

What is Dysport comprised of

Dysport is comprised of two parts: a heavy molecular chain and a light chain connected by a binding molecule. When injected, the heavy chain of the Dysport molecule attaches to receptors on the ends of nerve cells, allowing the Dysport molecule to enter the nerve cell. Once in the cell, internal conditions break apart the heavy chain from the light chain. The light chain then cuts specific SNARE proteins, the receptors to which the vesicle containing acetylcholine binds.

It’s important to note that the effects are temporary, typically lasting for about three months. During this time, the snipping action prevents the vesicle containing acetylcholine from attaching to the nerve cell, effectively halting the release of acetylcholine into the space between the nerve and the muscle, thereby preventing muscle contractions. The receptors regenerate as the body’s natural processes take over, and normal muscle function is gradually restored.

What is a Dysport Treatment

A Dysport treatment involves a few intramuscular injections using a small gauge needle (insulin needle) into the muscles that cause wrinkles and folds. It is typically a 10-15 minute procedure with no downtime and minimal pain. Dysport is often used to treat the wrinkles between the eyes, on the forehead, and extending from the corner of the eyes. It can also lift the corners of the lips (a downturned smile), reduce jaw pain, relieve migraines, and smooth out a dimpled chin. Dysport has recently been used to rejuvenate the neck by smoothing the verticle tendon-like structures that give the neck a skeletal appearance that forms with age.

When Does Dysport Kick-In

Dysport is fast-activating, one of the key differentiators between Botox and Dysport. Typically, it takes effect quicker than Botox, reaching full effect around day seven rather than day 14. This is primarily due to differences in their formulations. Dysport contains smaller molecules than Botox, which may allow it to act faster after injection. Additionally, some studies suggest that it may have a faster onset due to differences in how the body processes its active ingredient compared to Botox.

How Much Does Dysport Cost

The cost of Dysport can vary depending on several factors, such as the geographic location, the provider’s expertise, the number of treatment areas, and the dosage required for each individual. In the Northwest region of the United States, the cost of Dysport injections typically ranges from around $4.50 to $6 per unit. Since 3 Dysport units equal 1 Botox unit, many providers convert Dyport units to Standard Botox Units for easier dosage delivery and consistent pricing. For example, at Aluma, an average treatment for the lines between the eyes is 25 Botox Units, which equals 75 Dysport Units. If charging $5 for Dysport and $15 for Botox, the price would be the same: $375.
